"Without art, the crudeness of reality would make the world unbearable." — George Bernard Shaw
Project Overview
Wordsmiths of Kuching (WoK) commissioned a set of opening and background animations for their spoken word segment at What About Kuching 2022, centred around the theme BODY.
Challenges
Translating the intimacy and vulnerability of spoken word poetry into a large-scale visual experience is a delicate balance. The animation needed to feel personal and present without overshadowing the performers it was meant to elevate. On top of that, coordinating a creative vision across illustrators and animators working from four different countries added a significant layer of complexity
Solution
We brought together a cross-country team of illustrators and animators to build a visual world that felt like a living, breathing homage to spoken word. I contributed to the creative direction alongside the team and took charge of the 3D elements during the climax of the title sequence, where the visuals reached their most striking and cinematic moment, giving the opening the weight and presence it deserved on a stage that size.
